Cross sections of the spinal cord.
Thoracic spinal cord cross section. Most people have seven spinal bones in the cervical column 12 in the thoracic column and five in the lumbar column. The posterior median sulcus is the groove in the dorsal side and the anterior median fissure is the groove in the ventral side. These are tracts of myelinated axons.
It is largest at the c4 c5 and l4 l5 levels. Note the commissure rendered in grey. The cord has grooves in the dorsal and ventral sides.
Right cellular stain vary con siderably. Cross sections at different levels left myelin stain. So what we have here is a cross section through the cervical segments of the spinal cord and we can appreciate that from our navigational window.
Thoracic spinal stenosis occurs when the spinal canal through which the spinal cord travels or the opening through which nerve roots exit the spinal canal narrows. This is an illustration of a cross section of the thoracic spinal cord. At the back are two dorsal horns and away from the back are two ventral horns.
